It's the waning days of the 1980s and Kurt Franklin, headman for Thunderstick, the "New Romantic" alt-rock band is signed to a major label and on the brink of success. Unfortunately he is also off his meds and convinced his songs and the group's imminent success are divinely ordained. In walks Sophie Clark, a teenage supermodel who dabbles in witchcraft. She finds respite from her own fast and fierce education on the catwalks and casting couches in a love triangle that might rip the band apart. The parallel plots in Before the Flock, says Kirkus Reviews, "artfully converge into a blur of rock gigs, sex and expository melodrama--all depicted with pitch-perfect clarity."

Before the Flock David Inglish 9780615790817 Books Reviews
Amazing read. A must have for any literary enthusiast.
I really didn't enjoy this book despite the positive reviews. i was not engaged or interested in the outcome of the characters. i would not recommend it.
I love it when things keep getting better and better.... Before the Flock started out good and ended great! It was so entertaining, this perfectly prosed, expose into the tantalising and glamorous worlds of 80's Rock-n-Roll and Modelling! I fell in love with the characters, even the ones I hated! It was impossible to not become attached to the struggle and sensationalism around the entire story... It ROCKED- literally!!
What a great read! There are so many great characters in the book, each deserving of a separate book.I love the style of writing in the book. The saltatory, jagged, joyous narrative captures the experience of the band so well. I felt like I had a series of amazing elaborate photographs with Inglish's naked description of one vivid piece of that photo and then we were quickly onto to the next picture. Not to mention all the local Socal references and the capture and preservation of a narrow window of time/culture of the 80's.
Highly entertaining, and clearly based on personal experience. It's as if you're living within the author's subconscious as the events unfold. Meteoric rise of a rock band, confounded by flawed and fractured relationships, and the fickle and flighty nature of the industry itself all drive the storyline as if they were characters in the book. Well worth the time!
What a great book! I love this book for many reasons it is engaging, flowing & witty, and it connected me to the people and led me to really care about them. It was tough to put the book down, and I was very sad when it ended. I can't wait for another book by David Inglish. Whatever the topic, I will want to read it - that's how good of a writer he is.
I think that it is a great read for everyone, with universal aspects that most people can relate to relationships between people, trying to grow a business, the interplay between business & personal connections, psychology, and a lot more.
Thank you for such a great book!
When is the sequel to BEFORE THE FLOCK, written by David Inglish, going to be out?
An amazingly written prose, with incredible psychological insights into his character's psyche; I am starting to think that David Inglish is a psychological genius . . .
Yes, this book is about the 80's, Drugs, Rock and Roll, Supermodels, glamour, and destruction; but, it is more about a personal journey for his characters as they search for meaning and self.
The reader will experience the paramount force of good and evil fighting within the main character's person; the voices inside Kurt's head, are characters, all on their own. Sophie, the damaged Angel of beauty, dares (at all cost), to be everything her mother wanted and painfully destroys all around her in the process. The intricacies of the relationships between the other band members flow in and out appropriately thru out the book; helping to weave a story of innocence taken, ambitions soiled, and dreams of being a mega star, ultimately, never realized . . .
This book is a must read for those that always enjoy an author who has such a good command on the psyche of his main characters. This book is a must read for those who have ever wondered what it was truly like to be in a band in the 80's music scene. David Inglish adequately depicts that genre in a world that seemed to cater to extremisms and capitalism -- even amongst the crazy long-haired, tight leather wearing, drug taking, rock singing mega star bands.
Great job, David Inglish! Now, when is your sequel coming out?
