What is Nice Guy Syndrome?
Nice Guy Syndrome is an affliction where a heterosexual male is frustrated because he finds himself caged within the friend zone of women he'd prefer to be dating. Often, he is a kind and sympathetic person who listens well, and lends a shoulder for women to cry on. He's loved and admired, but not the type of fellow women sleep with.
If there is a hell, this is it, and I'm in the penthouse.
I was raised to be a nice guy. My relatives and teachers instilled in me the importance of
- Treating women gently
- Protecting and providing for women
- Listening to women without judging
- Understanding what it is women want, even when they don't say the words
- Opening and holding doors for women
- Handling certain tasks for women
- Writing love notes to women
- Complimenting women
I'm a master of the above and, thereby, block my own access to the physical parts of women I long for.
So, what's a nice guy to do? Should I shed my skin, get a Harley and tattoos, lose all concern for how I'm perceived, and begin banging lonely chicks by the dozen, just to please my pecker? I can't do it. All I can do is vent, and hope someday, some woman will realize she deserves something better than bad boy bruises.
Women love it.
"Only in the head of Mr. Torcivia will you find such a mix of wise truth about men and their behavior. Don't read this smut in the middle of the airport, LOL, or you will find your face turning the same color as this book cover." - Cathy Cook
"Congrats to Phil Torcivia on the newest book! Here's hoping I don't get my taken away from me by my Doctor's assistant for giggling too loudly in the exam room." - Anita-Michelle Miller
"Phil's day to day kindness and sharing of relationships knows no bounds. I most definitely did not believe in the Nice Guy Syndrome until this book. Romantic, delicious with a touch of intrigue and blood." - Gracey Castro
Read this book and laugh with (not at) me.
Seriously. I'm fragile. Be nice, dammit! I promise a giggle or two from me to you.

Why is it that I cannot just box the ears of the Nice Guy and slam the door in his face?! I am drawn to him like a fruit fly is drawn to an overripe banana! I have cozied up on his lap in the recliner; I have wiped the bubbles off his face in the bath, and yes, I have taken him to bed with me. Damn! There's just something about him. He does have symptoms of a lifelong condition that some peeps would find undesirable, maybe even abnormal. I like him because underneath all his misbehavior, he is a real guy.Nice Guy Syndrome, Phil Torcivia's newest endeavor was a fun read with all its bawdy, suggestive, and facetious humor. I got to take a breather when I read the irreverent texts from his cats, Syd and Symon interjected through out.
Go at reading Nice Guy Syndrome like you would a game of "Hot or Cold" instead of "Fish," and you'll be happier.

Disclaimer #1 I received this book for purposes of a review.
Disclaimer #2 I know what STFU is without googling it (see the book for the reference.)
You know how you switch through channels on your TV, come across some show of a stand up comic you might not have heard of before, and then you are glued to the screen until the show is over? Well, this book is an equivalent of that.
So, what's the secret? On a surface, it's pretty simple if the comic in the example (or the author of this book) talk about sex and/or relationships, we, as humans, are evolutionary programmed to tune in and listen. If the way they talk is easy, off-beat, and make us laugh or smile, that provides us with an additional motivation to keep listening. Or reading, as is the case here.
In practice, holding the reader's interest even with suggestive humor is not that easy. It takes comic skill, sense of timing, knowing when to let the reader rest a little before starting on another funny scenario, and many other things.
It also requires the writer to ask some unusual questions. For example
"Why are you so ******* weird, and is it fun? In fact, is it possible that you are normal, and I am weird?"
Or looking at things we take for granted and turning them upside down
"I need to come out. I ... am ... heterosexual. There, it's out. Gosh, I feel such relief already. You have no idea how hard it is to hide my love for ***** and ******."
On a personal note, I liked the text messages to the author from his cats quite a bit; those were very nice breaks into shorter humorous dialogs with punchlines.
A good read.
No "nice guy" writes stuff this nasty. I didn't finish it, and I wish I could get it out of my iPad.
Not really into the action he describes as a septuagenarian married 50 years but has made me think a bit about my life and laugh and think about the parts with which I agree as well as those which I reject.
