The life and adventures of a Quaker among the Indians Thomas C 18281897 Battey 9781176781511 Books Reviews

“Thomis-sy good man” -- this description of Thomas Battey by Stumbling Bear, a Kiowa chief, rings true in every page, as Thomas faithfully records his time spent among various Native American tribes, including the Caddoes and the Kiowas -- the latter of whom posed the greatest challenge to his divinely inspired mission of building peace and understanding between Native Americans and the Inevitable the continuing immigration-surge that was taking their lands and killing off their spirt and culture, both externally, with the extermination of the buffalo, and internally with the US Government repeatedly breaking its promises -- not to mention the hypocrisy of how the law was applied where wrongs done to Native Americans were largely ignored but the faintest rumor that Native Americans were involved in a crime brought down justice indiscriminately on all tribes; it was just this that led to Thomas’s great challenge to reason with the government that the Kiowas should not be held responsible for the actions of the Modocs… he paints a sympathetic picture of their plight in the book’s addendum.

It’s hard to do this book justice with just a couple of paragraphs, but let me try, by giving examples from the book; and I want to add that while a previous reviewer found Thomas’s writing “dry” -- I’m not sure how far they got through it --, please keep in mind that his journal letters (which this book is based on, and which were written to his wife and family back home) were meant to give an accurate description of the whole situation, warts and all, as presented in a clear and precise language that doesn’t necessarily read exciting, but contains truly awe inspiring passages, and unforgettable experiences...

(The Western Frontier Library edition, New Edition Copyright, 1968) P. 174 Vivid description of a Medicine Ceremony where a white-woman’s scalp, bone-whistles, blue breech-cloths, hypnotic dancing to the beat of drums, and other stuff of the rite, give honor to the medicine at the center, which is concealed behind feathers; a couple of pages later, young braves offer up their prayers to the medicine. In short order, Thomas goes on to record buffalo hunting preparations, the hunt itself, and the terrible dangers of it.

P. 209 Thomas is blessed by the medicine/shield of Sun Boy. Around this part of the book, we get a clear picture of the tremendous work he did in helping to prevent bloodshed between the Kiowas and the government in relation to the Modocs--; in particular, see page 157 where he writes a letter to the government that’s monumental in helping to keep the peace; and enough can’t be said about his important ally in this work, Kicking Bird, whose nobility and wisdom is astounding to read about.

P. 239 He writes about how Native Americans are unfairly portrayed in popular culture, and how thugs and bandits often disguise themselves as Native Americans.

P. 241 There’s an unforgettable scene where Thomas breakfasts with an old Kiowa warrior in his lodge – giving us a detailed description of multitude of human scalps before him dried testaments to the old man’s marital prowess.

On a lighter note, on p. 246, Thomas goes into a beautiful description of what true religion means to him what can’t be contained by words but lives in the heart of us all, and if we listen to it, will help us to accomplish what we’re here to do.

And finally, on page 332, Thomas sums up Native American culture best when he says, when speaking about an Indian camp, “… for what can be out of place where nothing has a place?” The meaning being, that everything created is good, and it is here for all of us to use.

Thomas C. Battey undoubtedly saved a lot of lives, both Native Americans and Whites/Immigrants during his time here… he deserves to be remembered, and it should be remembered that his writing doesn’t reflect his true personality according to family and relatives he was full of humor and was a great story teller – if you can get past the formal language (an anachronism of the time) you see a man full of life and someone who wanted the best for his Native American brothers because it was in all of our best interests.
Very dry reading, but this was written by one of my ancestors and covers interesting material.
